SMWS是"The Scotch Malt Whisky Society"（苏格兰麦芽威士忌协会）的缩写。这是一家以会员制运营的组织，创立于1983年，总部设在苏格兰爱丁堡。SMWS的主要业务是购买威士忌原酒，并在自己的品牌名下瓶装销售，也就是其他文章中提到的独立装瓶（IB）。
SMWS以其独特的方式著名，他们的瓶子上通常不会标明酿酒厂的名称，而是用一个编码系统。例如，编码"1.1"表示这是他们从第一家酿酒厂购买的第一桶威士忌。SMWS的这种编码方式使得品尝者可以在没有品牌偏见的情况下，根据自己的口感来评价威士忌。
此外，SMWS的威士忌大多是单桶装瓶（single cask），并且都是无冷凝过滤（non-chill filtered）和未添加色素（natural colour）。这些特点意味着他们出售的威士忌可以尽可能接近桶中原有的风味。
